Insidious Film Poster Analysis

The title of the film is located at the bottom of the poster, centrally positioned. This allows the audience to clearly recognize and identify the film that this poster is advertising. The font used is sans serif which gives the title a bold yet striking effect. A white colour has been used which stands out against the dark tones and colours within the image. This is important as it makes the poster look far more professional and audience appealing as everything is clear to see.

As you can see two images have been used on this poster, the main image and a secondary image. the image of the house has been placed in the background which implies that this is the location of the film. it could also suggest that the main image containing the boy has a connection to the house. We can assume that the house is maybe haunted based on the dark appearance it's showing us. The main image is a foregrounded young boy shown in a low angle which makes him appear superior, telling the audience that this character is most likely the protagonist as he is the only character shown on the poster. A medium shot has been used of him which has been placed in the centre of the poster, again reinforcing the idea that he is the main character.

I have decided to pick this film poster to analyse as I think it relates well to the film trailer I wish to create. This poster is really striking which grabs the attention of the audience immediately. The reason this poster look so impressive is because of the many conventions used.

The layout of the poster is set out portrait style, which is obviously the most conventional way a poster is set out. Everything is clear to see this way, with all the information set out in a specific order starting from the skyline at the top of the poster and the footer located at the bottom by using the Z-effect, With the main image in the centre and the secondary image behind it. The title is placed over the image along with the slogan.

The sub - text of the film is located just underneath the title " It's not the house that's haunted " This is clearly visible as the title is really bold and bright which contrasts against the dark background. This allows the audience to clearly notice, drawing them in to it. The sub - text also informs the audience of what the film contains. It's suggesting a deeper meaning, implying that maybe one of the characters is the one being haunted. The audience can clearly suggest that the film is paranormal related because of the use of the word " haunted " which is the most conventional word used on a horror film poster

The fonts used on this poster are all sans serif which gives the poster and overall bold and serious appearance. I think that bold sans serif fonts appeal to audiences more as they appear on most horror film poster as it's a rather conventional technique to be used.

Blackness surrounds the outside portion of the poster which emphasizes the dark atmosphere and tension that this film poster is trying to create the colour black is used on most horror film posters as it represents horror, death and tragedy which all horror films have in common.

The skyline is located at the top of the poster. Text has been placed there stating that the film is " from the makers of SAW and Paranormal Activity " I think that is the posters unique selling point and what grabs the audiences attention over everything. People who like and enjoy the films SAW and Paranormal Activity will enjoy this film as well based on how successful these films have already been.

The lighting that has been used is low key which is because of the dark tones and colours which gives the poster an overall dramatic and mysterious feel. This low key lighting is mainly focused on the bottom half of the film poster which could imply that the creator of the poster wanted to make the main character appear isolated, however, the top portion of the body of the boy is highlighted in high key lighting which makes the main image pop out from the background image. The boy is facing towards at the camera, looking straight at us in a direct mode of address mannor, however his eyes have been scratched over which has being edited on, therefore the audience can't fully connect with the character through the image which could also imply that the audience might not be able to connect with the character throughout the actual film. The eyes of the boy are where the audiences eyes are drawn to first which is what conveys the horror effect within the poster.

Located at the bottom of the poster is the production company name and logo as well as the distributors. This being the institutional text. This information isn't really important advertising wise however this let's the audience make up their own opinion of the film based on who has produced and distributed it. A wider audience is more likely to see a film that is produced and distributed by a big company.

There is also a date which informs the audience when the film will be released. An age restriction of 15 is also located at the bottom of the poster which clearly states that the film is only suitable for 15s and over which tells the audience that the film may contain inappropriate language or mature themes. We already know that this poster is aimed for an older age group because of the layout, colours, images and other conventions used to create this poster.
