The Value of Early Childhood Education

Good Start, Grow Smart

Where To Attend and What to Learn

Click on the following link to see exactly what

standards are involved with the program. Your

child should have these mastered before

entering a kindergarten program.

Negatives

Some parents may be against preschool for the following reasons:

Questions to Ask

  • private preschool programs are paid for by parents
  • time away from families during the last year before school is required
  • parents could teach them what they need to know

Benefits to attending

Look at the Bright Side

  • There are many preschool programs that are available at no cost, as long as parents qualify. To see if you qualify, check the link below:

  • Time will be lost from families, but the student will gain far more skills. It may make it easier for some families and schedules if older siblings are in school as well.

  • Parents do have the opportunity to teach their child these valuable skills at home, but with busy schedules and external factors it may be hard to give the student everything they need.

Requirements

It is not a law that your child must attend a preschool program. Students are not required to be enrolled in school until kindergarten, or at age 5. In South Carolina, parents are allowed to exempt their child from kindergarten with reasonable excuse and paperwork. It is, however, an excellent opportunity for your child!

  • Where can my child attend preschool?
  • What do I want my child to learn in preschool?
  • Will my child benefit from attending preschool?
  • Does my child really need to attend regularly?
  • Is there a consequence for not attending?
  • What will it cost for my child to attend?

Attendance

If a child is enrolled in a preschool program, it is very important that they attend the class regularly. A student misses out on valuable instruction if they are not present to learn. In the public system of Greenville County, an academic year does not count if a student has ten or more unexcused absences. The preschool program may have a different policy, but it is equally important for your child to be there.

  • It is important to find a school that both you and your student are comfortable with.
  • One of the main factors in picking a school should be the curriculum taught.
  • Preschools have the option of picking their own curriculum, or using the nation-developed standards under Good Start, Grow Smart.
  • Schools that use the nationwide curriculum are going to blend into the regular education program better than those with a school developed curriculum.
  • communication skills
  • sharing
  • learning the alphabet
  • handwriting
  • numbers
  • become familiar with school setting and expectations

Final Thoughts

I think that enrolling your child in a preschool program will have nothing but positive effects. The skills students learn in those early years lay the foundation for the rest of their education. The decision is yours!
