How do health and human service providers use technology for mandated reporting, make direct referrals, and locate and access resources?

Client Privacy and Confidentiality – “The rapid emergence of digital and other technology used by social workers to deliver clinical services has added a new layer of challenging privacy and confidentiality issues” (Reamer, 2013, para. Client Privacy and Confidentiality).

Mandated reporting: Technology allows mandated reports reporters to not only use the telephone as a reporting source but also computer technology. Using the internet and a computer of any kind you can contact the proper authorities either by filling out an electric form in most cases on their website.

Make Direct referrals: Making referrals can be done using your email or contacting an agency through the web site as well.

Locate and access resources: 98% of human services agencies provide the public with a website. There is also an excellent amount of information listed on the internet if you simply search what it is you are seeking. You can then choose the agency of your choice and read more about them or even call them to find out the proper information.

What is the compliance standard when using technology in health and human services?

“The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) required the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop regulations protecting the privacy and security of certain health information” (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.)."

Technologies Impact on Human Services

Technology in the 21st century has made strides of improvement making the ability to connect people and human services on a grand scale today makes for easier and accessible transfer of information.

"New technology can also connect patients and providers around the world, survey outbreaks of disease, facilitate the conduct of research, reduce medical errors, and provide online support from friends, family members and health care providers to improve disease management and adherence to care."(Blumenthal, 2016, para. 2).

What are two ethical concerns relating to the use of technology in service delivery?

Informed Consent – “The recent advent of distance counseling and other social services delivered electronically has enhanced social workers' ethical duty to ensure that clients fully understand the nature of these services and their potential benefits and risks” (Reamer, 2013, para. Informed Consent).

How does technology support client searches and applications for programs and services?

How does technology bridge clients in rural areas to services and programs?

Technology provides the convenience for clients to obtain a variety of services online. The use of technology makes easier the process of reaching and obtaining health care information, mental health and social services. The information and services are available 24/7 through apps, webpages and phone.

People in rural areas with the use of technology are able to get the services they need. For instances applications and services like welfare, unemployment, health care information and mental health services are available online for clients living in these areas. According to “Mobile health technology” more than one billion people in the United States live in rural areas and do not have access to healthcare. The use of technology has the power of connecting those in need with the services they need.
