- Applied to the Toronto School of Medicine because she was motivated by her husbands illness to study herbal healing and homeopathic medicine
- Denied acceptance because she was a woman
- Her reply: "Then I will make it the business of my life to see that they will be opened, that women will have the same opportunities as men."
- At 15, she began teaching at a school, and continued to for 7 years
