ACTIVITY!!!

Daniel Levinson graduated from Yale as a psychologist. He later developed a comprehensive theory of adult development. This theory suggests that development and growth happen well into the adult years, and that is why it was so significant.

Levinson's Seasons of Life

  • Early Adult Transition: 17-22
  • Entering the Adult World: 22-28
  • Age 30 Transition: 28-33
  • Settling Down: 33-40
  • Mid-life Transition (Crisis): 40-45
  • Entering Middle Adulthood: 45-50
  • Late Adult Transition: 60+

Basic Theory:

Levinson's theory explained that a person's life structure is shaped mainly by their social and physical environment, and it primarily involves family and work. Other variables such as religion, race, and status are often important and included as well. It maps out the underlying pattern of an individuals life at any given time and identified stages and growth that occur well into the adult years. He suggested that each stage has various developmental tasks and/or crises that one must addressed as well as how they contribute to the progression of development.

For each stage there are two types of periods:

1) the Stable Period - This is the time when a person makes crucial choices in life.

2) the Transitional Period - this is when one stage ends and another begins

Gender Differences:

Men:

The "Dream": Mostly focused around an occupation

Women:

The "Entering the Adult World" phase is more unlimited for men

The "Dream": Could involve many different things; a family, a job, or marriage to a husband with his own dream to fit into

Expected to have an occupation throughout their lives

The "Entering the Adult World" phase is much more predetermined for woman.

Men focus more on personal interests, their marriage, and their children

They have their careers interrupted by pregnancy

Later into adulthood they are well into their careers and will retire in several years

Mid-life transition: Career oriented and focused on personal achievment, not the achievment of their spouse or children

Age 30 transition may affect woman longer and later then men

Later part of adulthood is used to rise in their career
