The Body systems

Short term effects on the Musculoskeletal system

Musculoskeletal

Made up of all the muscles and bones in the body as well as connective tissues, such as tendons, ligaments and other structures within the joints.

Provides form, support, movement and stability

Cardio respiratory

Made up of 2 systems:

Cardiovascular system: heart, blood vessels and blood

Respiratory system: lungs and airways

Responsible for the transport, uptake and delivery of oxygen and nutrients, as well as the removal of waste products and carbon dioxide from the body

New bone formation:

High impact exercise ( running, aerobics, gymnastics) puts the skeleton under stress. This stress encourages new bone formation

Why?

Small and un-noticeable change. But regular exercise will cause more bone formation resulting in stronger bones

Learning aim A

Aim

UNIT 4 -The sports Performer in Action

Pass- outline and describe ways in which the musculoskeletal system Responds to short –term exercise

Short term effects on the Musculoskeletal system

Merit- Using three sports activities compare and contrast how the musculoskeletal system responds to short term exercise

Increased production of synovial fluid-

Bones and joints have no blood supply. Instead they are nourished and lubricated by synovial fluid

Why?

Helps to keep the joints healthy

Prevents damage of the joint when put under the pressure of exercise

TASK

Short term effects on the Musculoskeletal system

Spider diagram - what happens when you start to exercise. How does your body feel/ respond?

5 mins

Increased range of movement in the joints

Increased blood flow to the limbs, increased muscle temperature

Why?

When muscles , tendons become warm they become more elastic

Micro tears in muscle fibres

Exercise causes damage to the muscles called micro tears. Muscles must then repair

Why?

As the repair occurs muscles become larger and stronger
