Technical Drawings

Hand-drawn drawing

Process

Pro-E Drawing

1.Facing

This process is used to reduce the length

of the work-piece and to flatten the part

perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder.

Facing tool is used for this purpose.

This is a technique used to displace the

center of the cylinder. A piece of desired

width is placed on one side of the workpiece

at the chuck. This changes the axis

of rotation of the work-piece.

2.Center Out

3.Turning

This process is used to reduce the diameter of the work-piece. The work-piece is rotated and the right-hand turning tool is moved to remove materials slowly in increments.

4.Taper Turning

When the diameter of the cylinder is to be reduced

uniformly along the edges, the process of taper turning is used. This involves moving the carriage at a certain angle.

The formula used of the offset angle is as follows:

What it looks like

As seen in this picture ...

  • The shape of a wiggler is cylindrical with two more dislocated cylinders on opposite sides of the main cylinder.

  • On one side of the tool is another cylinder with a smaller diameter and a spring attached inside of the smaller cylinder.

  • On the other side of the tool is a cone shape also with a spring inside.

Introduction

  • A wiggler tool is used in the spindle of various machines.
  • Its basic purpose is to help in determining the precise center and the edges of a work-piece.
  • It is also called center or edge finder.

Limitations Faced

  • There was no CNC Lathe machine available in the market, so the product was a little off
  • dimensions due to human errors.
  • The machinist’s shop was distant from our hostel.
  • The machinist and our style of communication and dimensioning were very different.
  • The spring was not added into the final product as it would have sharply complicated the
  • manufacturing process.

And Now , to the video ........

THANK YOU

Future Prospects

  • The piece can be used as a pattern for casting more products
  • Various mechanisms like spring can be added to make the piece practically usable

Manufacturing Process Selection

  • Turning the center of the work-piece into a cylindrical shape
  • Converting the edges of the work-piece into cylinders of same diameter with their centers dislocated
  • Further reducing the diameter of both sides up to a certain length
  • Making a conic shape on one side of the work-piece
  • Improving surface finish

The Lathe Machine

We decided to develop a replica of

the tool which involved :

Objectives:

Conclusion

Some stats of Mild Steel

  • Mild steel is one of the most common forms of steel.
  • Its carbon content is about 0.16 to 0.29%.
  • The density of mild steel is 7.85g/cm^3 and
  • the young modulus is 210GPa or 30,000,000psi.

Some advantages:

We learned the basic processes involved in designing and manufacturing an object.

After first-hand experience, we now know much more about the operations on the lathe machine.

We really enjoyed the complete procedure

  • Better surface finish/quality
  • More dimensional accuracy
  • Greater control over the geometry
  • No shrinkage defects and surface discontinuities

Mild steel was selected because it was

  • easily available in the market and
  • was within our budget.
  • It also had feasible material properties for our application.

Reasons

Material Selection

This process was chosen because

  • circular shapes can be easily made with this machine.
  • It can be used for small dimensions with suitable accuracy.

WHY LATHE

Equipment used

Some dis-advantages

  • Metal wastage can only be sold for scrap
  • Time consuming
  • Decreases strength when metal is cut.
