Over-Generalizing
Unhelpful Thinking Styles
a.k.a. Cognitive Distortions
Labeling overall performance off of one event, or drawing conclusions too early.
"Nothing I do is ever right."
(He's worked here a week)
"John Doe always screws everything up."
Sometimes called "black & white thinking"
"I messed up once,
so I'm a failure."
All or Nothing
Because you made a mistake, you consider yourself a 'loser'.
One of your colleagues made a negative first impression, so they're incompetent.
Attaching an irrational label and turning a person into nothing more than their actions.
Mental Filter
Seeing the negatives, but failing to recognize the positives.
After meeting with your supervisor to review your performance evaluation, you focus only on the negative feedback despite the fact that you actually received more positive feedback.
How do you feel when...
...you're just trying to "get by"...
A Pursuer of Excellence
...you know you're "excelling"...
- Desires to attain a goal of excellence
- Achieves at a high level; strives to be the best that one can be but without the demand
- Does NOT demand a sacrifice of self-esteem
- Focuses on the process of achievement, rather than the outcome
...you're constantly striving for "perfection"...
