Sir Alexander Mackenzie was a explorer. .Sir Alexander Mackenzie was born on 1764 Stornoway, Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland– he died on 12th of march 1820 age 55 to 56 at the United Kingdom Scotland Dunkeld. He was the third of the four children born to Kenneth Mackenzie (1731-1780) and his wife Isabella Mackenzie.Alexander was a young ten-year-old boy when his mother died. He lived in Scotland when he was young. He had only two sisters, Sybilla, Margaret, an older brother Murdoch and his father, Kenneth.

The spring he continued paddling west , soon ending up on the Fraser River. At the time Alexander Mackenzie referred to the river as “River of the West”, today’s Columbia River .He followed the Fraser River south until his canoe lost control in the waves and became too wild for him to control. At that point he headed west overland and in the Bella Coola Valley on July 17th, 1793. With the support of some First Nations people around with their canoes, Alexander Mackenzie paddled down the Bella Coola River and into salt water in North Bentinck Arm. They continued paddling west to a calm river, but were turned back by a tribe in three canoes at what is know Mackenzie’s rock. Here he described “Alexander Mackenzie, from Canada, by land, the 22nd of July 1793”. This is the first crossing of North America, north of Mexico and he completed an extraordinary journey.
Exploring
Alexander and his family went to New York because they were poor in Scotland. But there was a war in New York so they had to move to Montreal. That was when Alexander became interested in fur trading and exploring. He joined a Company. In 1789, he set off to northwest Alberta in a canoe and his goal was to find the Pacific Ocean, but instead he found the Arctic Ocean. He went back to England to learn about navigating. He came back to Alberta in 1792 and tried to find the Pacific Ocean and this time he found it.
