Personal Education Essay
The paper is to describe your perspective on your education to help the admissions staff identify your definition of a good education and assess your fit within the goals of The Honors College. It should be two to three pages in length, double-spaced and address the following topics:
- Major influences on your intellectual development, such as important people, events or ideas.
- Your immediate educational goals and plans for achieving them.
- Your goals and dreams for the future.
VCU Honors College
Diversity of study
- A minor in any field of study.
- A second major in any field of study.
- A dual degree in any field of study.
- Successfully completing two upper-level courses — level 300 or above — totaling at least six credits from two different fields of specialization that are beyond your own primary field of study. Your field of specialization is more encompassing than your major and includes allied subjects. For example, biology is a subject within the field of natural science, marketing is an area of study within the field of business, English is included in the humanities and a craft and material studies major falls under the visual arts.
- Supplementing your primary major with a concentration of study by completing three upper-level courses — level 300 or above — in an area of study that lies outside your field of specialization. Combined, these three courses should total at least nine credits.

Students in The Honors College who have completed the rigorous course requirements and maintained an active role in The Honors College are eligible to graduate with University Honors. In order to earn this distinction, you must adhere to the following four guidelines established by the Honors Council:
- Cumulative and honors GPA 3.5, and 3.2 in honors courses
- Standard of excellence, as in reaching for ones full potential with in the program and taking advantages of opportunities
- Honors course work
- Diversity of study
What makes the Honors College different ?
- You have mentors, upperclassmen from the honors program, for your first year. And mentors from the graduate school there after.
- Smaller class sizes (20 students), allowing for more discussion and interaction with your professor
- Modules, which are like educational electives that range from: Honors, exploring gender identity; Considering Atheism, The Recorded Human Voice: An Exploration of the Use of Interviews in Radio, Drama, and Text .
- Countless independent studies, research options (which overlaps with), study abroad through the honors college
