Romeo and Juliet- Allusion Research Project

Analysis

Juliet says Jove laughs at lovers perjuries because he is the Roman God that deals with the laws like a judge in a court, Jove is a very strict and powerful God but when lovers lie he finds it very amusing. Juliet is warning Romeo that if he is not telling the truth the Gods will be angry with their marriage. The reason Shakespeare puts this reference in No Fear Shakespeare- Romeo and Juliet is to show that Juliet is a very religious person and wants to be sure that Romeo understands her love for him.

Research

Jove is the English version of Jupiter the supreme ruler of Roman pantheon, he is also called diespater meaning "Shining Father". Jove is the God of light and the sky, he also is the protector of the state's laws. Jove is the judge when someone is on trial and he is very serious, but when lovers lie to each other they say he laugh at them. Jove had a temple and was the main thing in Capitoline traid. Jove had the most important sanctuary in Rome, his temple was not only a temple it was the center of Roman political life. In the temple official offerings were made, and treaties with other country's were signed, wars were also declared here and the victorious Roman generals cam her to thank Jove for his help.

Romeo wants to swear his love to Juliet, but Juliet thinks that if he swears he might be lying to her. So Romeo tries to swear by the moon his sacred love for Juliet, but Juliet says not to swear by the moon, because it is an inconstant thing that is always changing. So instead of swearing his love to Juliet he asks her to exchange her loves faithful vows for his(marriage). Juliet accepts and they decide to get married the next day.
