Migrant Hostel: Skrzynecki Poem

How Skrzynecki has used techniques to create meaning

"Like a homing pigeon" is a simile that shows how the persona is comparing the migrants to a bird that is trained to come back, to locate it's group.

Poetic techniques in Migrant Hostel

Key ideas explored in Migrant Hostel

In this example it shows how the migrants from different countries who arrived in parks tend to group together. It creates meaning to the reader as there is a comparison to migrants and the homing pigeons.

There are differences in 'Migrant Hostel' and 'St Patrick's college' which is seen through the different themes in the poems. 'St Patrick's college' is based on a boy who doesn't feel a sense of belonging at school and his community. He also feels like he has let his mother down by not taking his education seriously and has a sense of guilt. 'Migrant Hostel' is based on migrants traveling to Australia from Poland. They find the transitioning difficult as they feel isolated from Australia and don't fit in because the are speared from the country .

Poetic techniques seen in migrant hostel are:

- Simile.

- Alliteration.

- Personification.

- Colloquial language.

- Tone.

- Metaphor.

- imagery.

- Emotive language.

In Migrant hostel it explores belonging and isolation. These key ideas are conveyed using imagery, simile and metaphor. The author conveyed the difficulty of moving to a new place like parks. It shows the transitory nature of life in migrant hostel and how it is difficult to form connections.

Skrzynecki has displayed effective techniques to create meaning by showing the reader how the persona feels. This is seen throughout the poem when he feels a sense of isolation and disconnection from his culture

Comparing and Contrasting these ideas in

'St Patrick's College' and 'Migrant Hostel'

'Migrant Hostel' and 'St Patrick's College' both have similarities that are seen thought both poems. They both show the key idea of isolation, disconnection and a sense of no belonging. These key ideas are seen throughout both poems as the student in St Patrick's college felt like he didn't belong and the persona in migrant hostel felt lost and isolated from the country. " Unaware of the season, whose track we would follow ... A barrier at the main gate, sealed off the highway". This quote is seen in migrant hostel and shows the disconnection he felt from the rest of Australia. "Caught the 414 bus , like a foreign tourist" Despite going to the school everyday for 8 years and traveling there in the same routine he never felt connected to the school and community. These quotes both display isolation and disconnection.
