Jane's Inspiration

Jane could have refused Maruge's attendance and could have avoided a lot of trouble but she let him in:

What was his purpose?

Maruge wanted to go to school because:

  • She got threats random threats because she was teaching Maruge but she did not give in to fear
  • She said she would transfer but never quit
  • He wanted to learn to read so that he could read the letter he was given for compensation of refusing to give up his oath
  • When the new teacher arrived the children refused her entrance and locked the door chanting for Jane

The Kids' Participation

  • Jane returned to the rejoice of faculty and students
  • He did not trust what the priests were telling him and he wanted to read the bible himself

Some adults may have judged and degraded the idea of Maruge going to school but the children did not:

"You must love education!"

"I will learn til I have soil in my ears"

  • While walking to school one of the little girls carried his bag
  • Another girl held his hand while out on play time
  • The little boy let Maruge teach him how to properly write the number 5
