Poultry processing in the 1950s located at the Piedmont Dressing Plant in Concord, North Carolina
By Megan Stocks
In July of 2014, the 1957 Poultry Products Inspection Act was replaced by new regulations based on a faster processing system and the dilema of the government letting the processing companies inspect on their own without the government and unions controlling their every move.
- to protect consumers from poultry that can cause sickness or disease
This piece of legislation established standards for inspections so that diseased birds do not end up in the poultry system for consumption. Before this, the US Department of Agriculture only inspected their poultry at the actual processors, and even then, not always a thorough inspection. Processors now had to collaborate and cooperate with government inspectors.
(HIPPA)
