Relaxation Technique

Possible Causes of Stress

• A change in your family’s financial situation

• Difficulties in school/home

• Injury or illness of family member or friend

• Parents separate/divorce or remarry

• Someone you are close to dies

• Personal illness or injury

• Changes in school or family situation

• Trouble in school or at home

• You are threatened by violence

• Theft of personal possessions

• Increased workload at home or school

• Arguments with parents/teachers/friends/siblings

• Failing classes in school

• Moving

• You are in trouble with the police

• Drug/alcohol use

• Added responsibilities at home/school or work

• Pressure to raise grades/improve performance

• Too many missed classes

• A change in sleeping/eating habits

• Boyfriend/girlfriend trouble

Common Stress Response

  • Senses become keener
  • Muscles tighten
  • Heart increases
  • Skin looks pale and feels cold and clammy
  • Thoughts race
  • Hands perspire more to cool the body
  • Adrenaline increase to provide energy
  • Shortness of breath
  • Upset stomach (butterflies)
  • May develop sudden headache

Stress Buster

  • Treat yourself well. Eat healthy, exercise, get plenty of sleep and allow time to do the things you enjoy.
  • Do something else for a while - go for a walk, exercise,read,see a movie, listen to music.
  • Talk to a friend, parent, teacher or counselor.
  • Ask for help.
  • Take a fresh look; brainstorm new solutions.
  • Don't be overly critical of yourself : give yourself a break.
  • Think of your past accomplishments and good qualities.
  • Learn your limits; take one thing at a time and don't take on more than you can handle.
  • Put things in perspective; pressures usually pass.
  • Write in a journal.
  • Use your sense of humor.
  • Learn to relax.

Stress is your body's response to demands such as; changes, threats, challenges, etc.

Whether the demand is real or imagined, outside or within, your body will react to it with a number of common characteristics call the stress response, or just plain stress.
