Activating Prior Knowledge
I will be sure to give positive reinforcement when I give critiques. Students need to know they are valued and that I am not there just to put them down. Also, showing students how they can use the material in real life could motivate them to want to learn more. Finally, keeping my students feeling safe and welcome will be a great way to keep them involved in the class discussions and help them to feel comfortable to ask questions.
New information will be presented in different ways. Sometimes I will simply write what we will be learning about on the board for students to see. If there are objects that relate to the lesson I will leave random objects around the room for the students to observe and see if they begin to ask questions about the objects. We may also begin a new lesson by reading text or watching a short film that will interest the students.
When we have a group discussion about the new topic, I will ask students what they already know about the topic. The class could also brainstorm on what they already know and the students could create their own brainstorm webs. One other fun activity is to create an Anticipation Guide. The students will hear 5-10 statements regarding the new material. They need to decide if they agree or disagree with the statement. As the lesson progresses they will then revise their answers as they learn the material.
Both models:
is based on research that guides the development of flexible learning environments that accommodate to individual learning differences.
teachers provide different students different ways of learning, processing, and showing knowledge of material.
Teachers who use UDL anticipate problems that may arise during a lesson and create modifications to their lesson plans before they teach the lesson.
There are 3 keys to UDL:
1. Multiple means of representation- ways to acquire the information
2. Multiple means of expression-
choices on how to show what was learned.
3. Multiple means of engagement-minimize distractions and use material that interests the students
