  • All hope of a US offense against Japan rested on a chain of tiny islands, known as Hawaii.
  • The Hawaiian islands were the only area of US territory close enough to Japan from which to successfully launch an attack.

The Battle of Coral Sea

One aircraft carrier was lost on both sides. Although this had more of a negative effect on the smaller navy of the US, the battle demonstrated to Japan that their great war machine was not completely unstoppable. The US had halted the Japanese advance for the first time.
