"Now he says it was a beastie. 'Beastie?' 'A snake-thing. Ever so big. He saw it.''Where?' 'In the woods.' Either the wandering breezes or perhaps the decline of the sun allowed a little coolness to lie under the trees. The boys flet it and stirred restlessly." p. 34

"There was a ship. Out there. You said you'd keep the fire going and you let it out!' He took a step towards Jack who turned and faced him! They might have seen us. We might have gone home -'... 'You and your blood, Jack Merridew! You and your hunting! We might have gone - ' p. 74

Mentions of the "Beast"

Jack's Decision to leave the group

Beginning of Jack's obsession

The Beginning

Jack's Mistake

5. Jack decides to leave the group and to focus on hunting in his own group and asked others to join as well if they wish to hunt and this would ignite savagery. This led to the breaking up of the group and the peace was forever gone. Things broke up because they didn't cooperate with each other and only focused on their on “their wants” for the group. The selfishness in the group led to the break up between them and they were no longer happy.

1. When Ralph was chosen to be the leader because of the conch obviously Jack was jealous, but he did get to be the leader of the hunters. This would later lead to tension in the group. However, everything was going well they were happy.

2. Jack has an opportunity to kill a pig, but he hesitates and doesn't go through with the kill. This would shortly lead to an obsession with him wanting to kill a pig and to feast. As this would happen Jack would start to become selfish and only care about his killing of the pig. This made Jack go crazy and only care about the pig.

4. The signal fire died out because the boys in charge of watching the fire were not on duty and a ship was nearby and because of them they blew one of their best chances to get off the island. This situation made Ralph very angry at Jack because they went hunting instead of taking care of the fire to be rescued which should be of been their main priority. This would have been their chance to get off the island. The peace within the group starts to disappear after this moment because Jack would only care about hunting and blood.

3. When the boy with a birthmark first mentions the beast there was a lot of commotion in the group and rumors that led to the fear in the littluns and also the rest of the group. Both Ralph and Jack were talking and looking for rational reasons as to why it doesn't exist, however it did and it was inside of them. This fear would make the happiness fade away and fear to be brought in and would cause tension within the group.

"This is our island. It's a good island. Until the grown-ups come to fetch us we'll have fun" p. 33

Piggy's Death

Piggy's Glasses Getting Stolen

The End of Innocence

Simon's death

9.When Ralph was crying at the end of the novel, this showed off the fall of civilization and what beasts that these boys turned into for the duration that they were on this island for. Ralph cried for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart because he knew that he and the other boys had evolved so much and want it to end, and he even cries out for his friend that he lost Piggy.

8.When Ralph, Piggy, and Samneric confront Jack and his band of hunters at castle rock to retrieve Piggy’s stolen glasses, something terrible happens. Roger, one of Jack’s hunters launched a boulder at Piggy which hit him in the head and launched him off a cliff 40 feet to his death. This is portraying the hunters as murderers, as they killed Piggy for trying to retrieve something that had belonged to him. This shows that the boys evolved into savages, murderers, and thieves because they did whatever they wanted to since there were no rules on the island.

7.Jack and his crew of hunters stole Piggy’s glasses from him in the middle of the night. This demonstrates how they have evolved from innocent little boys to monsters. They stole the glasses for their own selfish needs when the fire was first used for rescue. This shows how since there were no rules on the island, the boys started to do what they wanted, which was a bad thing.

6.When most of the group killed Simon, they mistook him for the beast. All of the kids grouped up and started to beat him up with their spears. When Simon was only trying to tell them the truth of the so-called beast on the mountain. This displays the savageness in the boys because they jumped on him and killed him because they thought that he was the beast when the whole time they could not realize that the beast was inside of them because they let fear to lead them to do evil acts.

" The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist... Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across that square, red rock in the sea." p. 201

"The beast was on its knees in he centre, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise something about a body on the hill." p. 168-169

"Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy." p. 225

Conclusion

Things started to break up because the kids were not co-operating with each other and started focusing on their own wants instead of what best for the group. If maybe the boys did the opposite of their actions their outcome on the island might of been more positive.

Lord of the Flies show when left without laws and order human civilization will descend into chaos and anarchy
