The History of Electricity in America

*The percentage of rural homes that had electricity had risen to 25% from 10% by the year 1939 .

*The Tennessee Valley Authority Electric Home and Farm Authority helped farmers and people who lived in rural areas purchase electric appliances. Now nearly everybody in America has access to electricity.

*The beginning of the history of electricity cannot be pinpointed or defined because the beginning of the discovery of electricity is extremely broad all over the world.

* "By tying a key onto a kite string during a storm, Ben Franklin , proved that static electricity and lightning were the same. His correct understanding of the nature of electricity paved the way for the future."- The Historical Archive

* One of America's founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, was also an inventor; he flew a kite during a thunderstorm in order to prove that lightning was electrical in 1752 .

*He got lucky because he was not seriously injured during his experiment although he received an electrical shock. He tied a metal key to the string of the kite and electricity flowed into the string while it was wet.

* In the years to come, many, many inventors tried out different experiments to find a way to use electrical power in order to create light.

* In 1879, Thomas Edison finally produced a durable light-bulb in his secret laboratory.

*Electrical Stations that followed Thomas Edison's designs were placed in various cities, although each station was only able to power a few blocks of electricity, it was a very big improvement.

What is electricity?

Electricity is known as the movement or flow of electrically powered or charged particles. In the most common form used daily, it is generated by other energy sources (primary) therefore it is considered a secondary energy source.

*Many people who lived in big cities or larger areas already had electricity by 1930 ad only around ten percent of people who lived on rural land or farms had electricity in their lives. Electric companies were privately owned and only ran in order to make money or a profit off of.

*Companies said that it would be too expensive to run electricity for miles and miles at a time and farmers would never be able to afford it.

* President Franklin D. Roosevelt firmly believed in everyone having equal access to electricity and he stood for the rights of farmers and everyone else who lived on rural land to be able to have electricity.

* In 1935 the Rural Electric Administration was created to bring electricity to rural areas like the Tennessee Valley.
