the elements are arranged in columns according to how many valence electrons they have, and that tells you what they do in chemical reactions.

The periodic table is a tabular arrangement of the chemical elements,organized on the basis of their atomic numbers,electron configuration,and recurring chemical properties.

A valence electron is an electron that is associated with an atom,and that can participate in the formation of a chemical bond.

The presence of valence electrons can determine the element's chemical properties and whether it may bond with other elements

The rows of the table are called periods and the columns are called groups.

There are 90 elements on the periodic table that occur in nature. All of the other elements are strictly man-made.

Types of elements

Most of the elements on the periodic table are metals. The alkali metals, alkaline earths, basic metals, transition metals, lanthanides and actinides all are groups of metals.
