How is it diagnosed/treated?
The mallory-weiss tear should heal within a few days without treatment such as surgery because it is rarely needed.Drugs can be given to patients to suppress stomach acid.
If there is mass amount of blood loss, blood transfusion may be needed but in most cases, the bleeding will stop within a few hours without treatment.

Prognosis
In about most cases the bleeding is self-limited, and would have stopped in most patients during the time of endoscopy.
Prognosis is excellent for patients without an associated disease or complications but a second endoscopic evaluation is not needed unless the patient remains symptomatic after initial treatment.
In some cases, re-bleeding occurs in about 8%-15%. High risks of bleeding include old age (aged >65 years), haematemesis(vomiting of blood), shock, alcoholism, aspirin, those with multiple blood transfusions, anemia, chronic liver disease, and those with actively bleeding lesions.
History
During 1929, Kenneth Mallory and Soma Weiss firstly described a syndrome that whas characterised by the bleeding of the esopheal which is caused by a tear in the esophagus, resulting in vomiting and retching. Mallory-Weiss syndrome was often associated with alcoholism and eating disorders.
