Attaching a Phosphate Group

Attaching a Base

Joining the Nucleotides into a DNA Strand

The Basic Structure of DNA

A DNA strand is simply a string of these nucleotides joined together

...and you can continue to add more

nucleotides in the same way to make the

DNA chain

Joining the two Strands Together

Adenine always bind with thymine and guanine always

binds with cytosine

These particular pairs fit exactly to form very effective hydrogen bonds

Deoxyribose is a ribose sugar which has lost an

oxygen atom

The Final Structure of DNA

Deoxyribose sugar is a modified version of another sugar called ribose

The Sugars in the Backbone

Repeating units of a sugar group

and a phosphate group

DNA = Deoxyribonucleic acid

Numbering the Carbon atoms on Deoxyribose Sugar
