By: Basel Mahmoud
What is Blood and Iron?
Teaching about Blood and Iron
- Speech given by Otto von Bismark in 1862
- About unification of German territories
- Also a quote "uttered" at end of speech
What I learned and how
- Have students read and explain different parts of the speech
- Have students analyze the text by using the ACAPS format
- The speech was to stress the importance of the millitary
- This was to convince Parliament to increase millitary funding Learned this by:
- Reading/ Outlining pg.85
- Reading the Speech and its meaning
How I see the World
- After analyzing the speech, I realized that the world relates to this in a way.
- Most countries turn to violence immediately
- Peace talks seem to have no use
Why I Chose it
Primary Sources
- It interests me how the the "great questions of the time" were to be decided by "Blood and Iron"
- Interested how using speeches and majority decisions was a "great mistake"
Excerpt From Speech:
It is not by speeches and majority resolutions that the great questions of the time are decided – that was the big mistake of 1848 and 1849 – but by iron and blood.
Analyzing
- Author- Otto von Bismark, Foreign Minister of Prussia and Junker
- Context- September 30, 1862, Prussia
- Audience- Budget Committee of the Prussian Chamber of Deputies
- Purpose- To assert that wars, not majority desicions, decide the major events in history; To persuade increase the millitary's budget
- Significance- The upper house became in favor of the budget and Bismark's position was strengthened
- Analyzing The text helped me understand more about the reason this speech was written and how successful it was.
