20th Century Art Music

Graphic Scores

Your task:

Using at least two features of 20th Century Music we've explored create a short piece of music and produce a graphic score. Use plain paper and today I will accept a rough version

Impressionism

Expressionism

Neo-Classicism

Serialism

Impressionism was about giving the impression of something rather than outright stating it.

Some composers grew tired of all the different 'isms' so decided to reinvent classical and baroque music in a new, fresh way.

Expressionism was about trying to express our inner most thoughts and feelings. Expressionism doesn't usually sound very pleasant

Serialism aimed to revolutionise how music was written. The composers decided to write the music in a very strict order creating tone rows that they would use over and over again. It takes quite some time to get used to it.

Schoenberg

Impressionist music can sound vague and 'empty'

Webern

Debussy

Debussy was a French Composer who is considered the best impressionist composer of all time. Other impressionist composers include: Ravel, Satie

Berg

Stravinsky

Stravinsky is considered by many as the best 20th Century Composer EVER. He wrote in loads of different styles but spent a large part of his career writing in a Neo-Classical style.

Graphic scores are an attempt to break down some of the old rules of writing music and are, therefore, open to interpretation.
