It is best if you turn off the lights when they are not needed. According to Energy Star, if you do not need the lights for over 15 minutes it is best for you not to use the light in the first place, turning on and off the bulb repeatedly will damage the bulb, therefore, requiring you to replace it.

Best available alternatives

One of the best alternatives is LED lights, because CFLs carry mercury, which is a toxic. Another good option is GE's Energy Efficient Soft light bulbs, they are very similar to the light bulbs you grew up with, except they use 28% less energy.

The best and most recommended way to dispose CFLs is is to go a recycling center. Your can also go to IKEA and they will send the bulb to the manufacturer, and they will take it from there. If you go to Earth911.com there is a search bar where it will allow you to see places in your area that will take your CFLs and recycle them for you.

You cannot use CFLs in the winter, they are sensitive to low temp.

How can the costs of using CFLs be minimized

The costs can be minimized by, not placing CFLs in areas where you do not need to turn on and off constantly (this can cause the bulb to become dimmer).

One bulb can reduce half a ton of CO2 in the atmosphere over the life of the bulb.

Takes time to turn on.

Costs/Drawbacks of using CFLs

Benefits of using CFLs

CFLs are up to four times more efficient than incandescent bulbs.

A 22 watt CFL bulb is equal to a 100 watt incandescent light bulb, CFLs use 50-80% less energy than incandescent lightbulbs. CFLs may cost more than incandescent lightbulbs, but they use 1/3 of the electricity compared to incandescent bulbs, and since you're using less energy, the bill costs will go down as well. One bulb can reduce a half-ton of CO2 out of the atmosphere over the life of the bulb. CFLs can be used in any area where you would usually use an incandescent lightbulb.

CFLs must be covered when used outside, to protect it from rain, snow, or wind.

CFLs can be affected to low temperatures, low temperatures can cause the light to become dimmer. These lightbulbs are supposed to be able to last about 10 000 hours, but turning them on and off frequently can lessen it's lifetime. They are fairly larger than an incandescent lightbulbs, and because of that reason they do not fit in every light fixture. CFLs can take about two seconds to light up, but to reach maximum brightness it takes up to thirty seconds. CFL bulbs contain mercury, and since mercury is a toxic it cannot be disposed in a landfill, they must be disposed in a recycling center. CFLs emit a harmful amount of UV radiation, which can lead to skin cancer.
