What: A groups of more than 300 workmen attacked Bastille so that they could get gunpowder for the guns they had stolen from a nearby veteran army base. Once inside they released the seven prisoners that were inside and they took all the guards as prisoners. They paraded the guards around before cutting their heads off.

When: The Storming of Bastille occurred on July 14th, 1789. It took place at about 3:30 P.M.

Where: The Prison of Bastille was located in Paris, France.

Why: The Bastille was stormed because the people needed ammunition for their guns. They also attacked it because the Bastille stood as a symbol of the brutality, torture, and totalitarian power they lived under with King Louis XIV.

Letters de Cachet

Storming of the Bastille

Main policy: The King's will is the law.

Orders issued by the king signed by the secretary of state and sealed with a cachet.

Ordered the receiver to act a certain way.

An example would be when individuals would be jailed with out explanation or trial.

Similar elements of this have been shown recently in other countries.

This is an actual image of one of the Letters de Cachet.

An example would be that foreign prisoners being held in jail just because they are assumed to be terrorists.

Prison Conditions

The Prison of Bastille was very rumored about. It was said that the prisoners were treated brutally and were tortured regularly.

In reality, prisoners were treated much better in Bastille than in any other prison in France.

Prisoners had their own cells and were kept in the prison for short periods of time.

They were, though, kept behind three triple-locked doors with highly restricted, censored communications and enforced secrecy.

Prisoners were sent to Bastille by order of the King and aristocrats not for committing crimes like theft or murder. They were sent there because they disturbed the social order.

How The Storming of Bastille is Remembered Today

In present France, July 14th is now their independence day.

People chose this day because they want to celebrate their first sign of freedom from the old French hierarchy.

A new national anthem was written for the first Bastille Day in a single night.

The first celebration of Bastille Day, another name to the French Independence Day, included a parade, flag flying, and organ music.

The goal of the celebration is to unify the nation.

Today it includes a military parade, fighter jets, dancing, and fireworks.
