Reflections

Semester 1

Semester 2

Now that my year in algebra comes to an end, I know already that I'm supposed to write another reflection. And this is probably not the only reflection I'm going to be assigned right now. Not that I dislike writing, like English is my favorite subject. For real. Anyway, in class this year, I realize that factoring/"mathemagic" is so much fun. It's actually fun enough that I even do it during my free time. I'm weird ><. Like pre-algebra though, I still struggle a lot with probability. Something about it doesn't let me understand it. I think I need to study it a little more over the summer, maybe.

I think algebra also taught me to think out of the box sometimes. Of course, there are always word problems/problem solving in all levels of math class, but from the therefore statements to this prezi, it helps me to understand things a lot more about math then I did before.

Honestly, the first half of algebra

wasn't as bad as I thought since most

things were making inferences to what I learned back in pre-algebra days. I don't know about you, 20-year-old me, but I think the only difference is that

I wasn't struggling as much as I did when I was prodded into pre-algebra by my parents and my tutors when the acceptance form came out. Anyhow, I learned a lot more about teamwork with others besides all the numbers, since we have group tests and all. Unpopular opinion: I actually don't mind having group tests at all. I mean, unlike most, I don't go insane like a toddler when I need to do it with my group, to be quite honest. I really don't like working in groups with people but it was quite nice to work with others now that I've done it a couple times in a fun, crazy way. Anyhow, I also learned about doing things in a (somewhat) organized manner, which is good because I need to work on my organization...

It was nice. It was nice.

How Do I Know

GSP/Desmos

Prompt #1: Describe the strengths and weaknesses of your personality.

When solving an equation such as 2x + 4 = 4x - 6 algebraically, you find that x = 5. Explain how you know that x = 5 is the solution when you solve graphically.

My personality, ENFJ, describes someone who is altruistic and charismatic. The results also said that I should be charming as well, which is quite strange because I always sit with my friends at one of the isolated lunch tables, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I just found it weird. Anyway, I'm very idealistic and very loyal, but I'm too insecure and selfless

Do you agree or disagree with the premise of the essay that people do not have a fixed intelligence but can actually become smarter?

You can separate the equations and make them into slope-intercept form, following y=mx+b. Then you can make y=2x+4 and y=4x-6. When you graph them, they will meet at (5, 14) as shown below-

I agree with this. I learned that even if you think that you are quite

smart, you can still grow more knowledge. It made an impact on me, and I agree with it.

Does this have any impact on how you

perceive the struggles that you go through

academically?

Prompt #2: How does your personality affect how you do your school work and interact with your teachers and peers?

Well, I guess I'm not the super extroverted type who would throw bottles across the class or make witty comments, so I actually am some form of a traditional student. And yes, I am very inflexible,

so I have trouble doing my schoolwork sometime, even I've been under a middle school schedule for more than a year now. I kind of find it hard to adjust to, but that's just me. I am worried about my social status as well, so sometimes, in front of my schoolmates, I can't really show what I want or what I would actually do besides some fake remarks I make...

Well, to be honest, I'm basically expected to be the smart one in my household (don't even ask me why. Sometimes, I feel like that they shouldn't be pushing me too hard to be like one of the best. Not because of the pressure, because I tend to think "Hey, I'm smart!" I guess I lacked in my room for improvement...

The domain and range for this function are D: {All Real Numbers x; -3<x<5} and R: {All Real Numbers y; -2<y<2}.

Explain why this is the correct description and why we use this type of notation instead of listing all of the numbers separately.

Prompt #3: Knowing this about yourself now, does this change how you go about your school work?

Does this have any impact on how you

perceive the struggles that you go through

academically?

As I answered the last questions, yes, yes it does.

It made me feel like that I shouldn't be afraid to improve on things. I learned that there is always room for improvement :)

Well, now I have a reason why I sleep late at night sometimes... just kidding. But I guess it doesn't change much about me, since I was always inflexible and always a little uncomfortable in working in groups sometime. The website also says that I like when everyone in a group knows what they're doing, which really got me scared because I always tell others "Are you sure you know what you're going to do?" or somewhat across those lines. Besides that, I guess I can try to be more flexible and open up to group work, although that probably wouldn't change so much, wouldn't it?

This would be a correct description because even though it saves time, there are many other different numbers that fit into it. And since it's an inequality, it would have more solutions than an equation without an inequality.

Write at least a couple of good paragraphs related to this prompt...Do you hate math, or do you hate the way that math makes you feel?

...How do you know that we have two solutions to most absolute value equations?

"...When you have a situation with exponential decay the graph of the function will never cross (or even reach) the x-axis. Explain how you know that this will never happen."

I know because the solutions will go on and on until infinity.

We can know that there are two solutions, because

the equation asks of the distance between a number x and 0. For example, if the equation was |x|=12, it means that the distance between x and 0 is 12. However, the solutions would be 12 and -12, because they are the only two numbers whose distance from 0 is 12.

Most seventh graders think that math ruins their life,

but unpopular opinion: I don't. Honestly, I think math is just another necessity for me that I must understand because without it, there would be absolutely no purpose of life. On the contrary, I hate the way that math makes me feel. Yes, it sometimes makes me feel stupid but as an Algebra student, or the fact that I'm in the "melting pot of nerds", it causes too much competition and stress for other students around me. And as a person that prefers win-win situations and equality in its best, it kind of haunts me a bit.
