History

Social Reconstruction Stresses:

  • Reforming Society: School is seen as a place to inform citizens at a young age and avoid societal problems; how to change the world by being the change
  • Social Purpose: To think about local, national, and international issues.
  • Democracy in the classroom: The teacher is to act as a facilitator of discussion, promote analysis, and suggest new perspectives.
  • Founding father- Theodore Brameld (1904-1987)
  • Founded it in reaction to the realities of World War II
  • Based philosophy on 2 assertions
  • 1. People have the capacity to destroy civilization.
  • 2. People have the capacity to create civilization that offers health and humanity.
  • Origins of social reconstructionism can go as far back as the early Greeks and to Karl Marx (fought for equity amongst all people)

Downfall of Social Reconstruction

  • Secularization of U.S. public schools was the root cause
  • Schools strived to be politically & religiously neutral
  • No longer encouraged students to confront social justice issues
  • Reconstructionists did not value other avenues to reach young citizens such as family, church, media, and industry
  • As a result Social Reconstruction is more present in student government, extracurricular activities, and clubs more than classrooms.

Social Reconstructionism is a philosophy that looks to education to change society, not just teach about it. It encourages students to learn how to help society by moving away from all forms of discrimination in order to benefit everyone worldwide. It also encourages students to think about their impact on the world and what they can do to change the world as we know it.

  • Reflect democratic ideas
  • Emphasize civic education
  • Encourage cooperative learning, problem solving, critical thinking
  • Community based learning
  • Question social assumptions
  • Whole class service learning projects
  • Consider world travel - students can experience the textbook in real life
  • Use culinary arts projects to encourage learning and acceptance of other cultures
