tunics, and of course their moccasins. The women also wore their hair either in a long braid or just down.
Men cut their hair short, and they decorated their hair with colored paints. Men also tied feathers into their hair. The style for men when it came to clothing was very simple. All they wore were breechcloths and their moccasins. Both men and women often wore cloaks to protect themselves from the weather. All their clothes were made from animal skins.
The Jumanos had a big variety of weapons. Some were hatchets, knives, bows and arrows, spears and many more. When going into battle, they fought with clubs made of rock or hard wood. As shields they used buffalo hides.
The Jumano Indians were indigenous tribes, which inhabited a very large part of Western Texas, New Mexico, and Northern Mexico near the La Junta region. Spanish Explorers recorded the first encounters with the Jumano tribes in 1581. Between the years of 1500 and 1700, the tribe name Jumano, was used to indentify three distinct peoples of the Southwestern and South plains of Texas.
Some Spanish Explorers refered to the Jumano people as "mud painted," and "naked" because they probably used mud to paint symbols on their bodies. Did you know that the Jumanos spoke many different languages? This came in handy when meeting explorers, it gave them the opportunity to trade and be able to comunicate with others.
Jumano Indian Tipis
Did you know that the Jumano Indians were not into killing people for rituals? Although, during battle and war times, they could get into war and battle rituals.
Did you know that even though the Jumanos took good care of their land, they had barely ever seen rain?
The Jumano Indians lived in a rather large area of Western Texas. Before the Indians moved in, it was a hot, dry, land. But as soon as they settled there, the land began to flourish with grass, and many animals soon began to graze there.
We now know that the Jumano Indian tribes were a very succesful tribe, in all categories: weapons, food, clothing, hunting/ gathering, and communicating. This was a fun report to do. I found out a lot of facts and interesting things about the Jumanos. The Jumanos taught the explorers many things, which was passed down from generation to generation. In conclusion, without the Jumano's survival smarts, we wouldn't be as knowledgable about hunting, preparing food, and many other things.
Did you know that when the first Spanish Explorers found the Jumano Indians, the Jumanos welcomed them? They did not fight with them, but instead they were curious to find out about their culture, as the Explorers were doing the same!
