Chemistry of Gum

Flavorings

Flavorings are what make your breath smell good and the gum taste minty. There are many flavors used in Gum, the most common being spearmint.

Gum Base

The Gum Base is a mixture of secret ingredients closely held by gum manufacturers. The Gum Base is what gives it the rubbery chew. What is known about these Gum Bases is that they are made of either polymers, resins, and/or other natural gums.

Ingredients of Gum

Natural Gums

Resins come from a split in a tree. Natural oils and chemical composition takes place once the sticky compound reaches the surface and solidifies. These Resins are then made into man made polymers.

Sweeteners

Polymers

Natural gums consist of waxes, and latexs.

Waxes coming from either paraffin wax or beeswax. Latexes like chicle from the sap of rubber trees.

However natural gums are no longer used in most gum company's and are replaced with man made polymers.

The main Ingredients to make up gum are the building blocks of the chew and long lasting flavor.

There are three types of Polymers that can be used in Gum. These polymers are actually types of Resins that are man made.

Styrene Butadiene

Poly(vinyl acetate)

Polyethylene.

Softeners are added to retain moisture. These softeners are used to create that smooth texture and help to not dry out. The most commonly used softeners are glycerin or vegetable oil based.

Giving the gum a sweetened taste to make it what we all long for. Most gums contain artificial sweeteners or sugars unless sugar free. These sweeteners are liquid and helps soften the gum as well.

Artificial Sweeteners

Natural Sweeteners

Built in a lab, artificial sweeteners are cheaper, making it an easy way to sweeten your food and gum.

Sugar is a more natural than artificial but are a little more expensive for mass produce making this ingredient less common. Corn starch is also used as a natural sweetener.

Sugar Free

Substitutes

There are multiple sugar free substitutes for gum such as Sorbital, Mannitol, Xylitol, and Aspartame. These are artificial replacements for sugar.
