Strategic for All!

Early Elementary

Upper Elementary

Middle and High School

Extensions:

This strategy could be extended to the level of providing reasons for multiple choices and then to be evaluated and a conclusion developed.

How does it all balance out?

Benefits:

-Provides a visual for ideas

-students to look at both sides of an issue before drawing conclusions

-Quickly Identify opposing points of view

-Guides discussion

-Teaches appropriate behavior and responses to different views

-Plenty of opportunities to enrich and refine understanding of what is read.

-All students have the opportunity to share and have their voice heard

-Allows students to:

o identify ideas of contention

o Weigh opposing viewpoints

o Critically evaluate the arguments

o Draw conclusions

Challenges:

- Proper and beneficial pieces may be challenging to find.

- Time consuming, especially first time

- Teachers need to be well prepared for helping to guide this strategy and work with the reasons the students provide.

- Can be a higher risk for the students if the environment is not set and “safety nets” provided.

- Students need to be able to provide thought – out reasons that can be backed up with evidence.

Goals:

-Helps students visualize the key elements of an issue

-Teaches students to look at both sides of an issue before drawing conclusions

Rational:

-Higher level thinking, taken to a deeper level

-Motivating for students

-Gives a power to their voice
