Just To Get You Thinking...

Round Gobies can eat up to 4000 eggs in 15 minutes

Each!

Becoming aware of this Prezi, this can make an impact of making the world a better place. Thank you so much to my teacher, Mr. Baetz for making me aware that other animals too are invasive. I thought humans were the only ones! (Seriously I actually thought that humans were the only ones invading) And doing this project made me a better knowledged environmentallist. Once again, thank you! :)

Great Lakes Invasive Species:

Round Goby

Appearance

To Keep You Interested....

• Adult round goby are 6-16 cm long

• Looks similar to several species of fish found in the Great Lakes

• Tubenose goby

• Sculpins

In less than a decade, the round goby has spread in all of the five Great Lakes and already has been invading inland waters.

On average, the fish density is 100 per sq metre.

Looks very similar right?

Where Does Round Goby Originate?

Arrival To Canada

Round goby is native in most parts of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea

• Was first found in North America in 1990 in the St. Clair River north of Windsor, Ontario

• Researchers believe that Round Goby was brought to Canada in European ships

Introduction

Habitat Preferences

Round Goby are one of the Great Lakes Invasive Species.

Round Goby prefer living on rocky and sandy bottoms, providing more opportunites to hide from their prey.

Learning Goal:

We are learning the effect Round Goby have on indigeneous species.

Why are Round Gobies A Problem?

Round gobies are very aggresive fish. Many problems arose when they set out in the Great Lakes.

Population Increase

Can Survive in Poor Water Conditions.

They can reproduce very quickly, up to six times in a summer.

This ability can benefit the round goby so they can compete with a variety of more fish.

Reduced Population of Sport Fish

Bibliography

Round Goby Has A Disease To Spread!

Round Goby has been eating sport fish eggs which can threaten the population of sport fish to extinction.

They Are Taking Over Other Fishes' Habitats

Researchers believe the round goby

is a part of the outbreaks of botulism

type E in Great Lakes fish and fish-eating

birds. It results in large die-offs of fish and

birds.

This is the biggest problem. Fish can lose their homes and become homeless.

What Should We Do?!

Everyone has to be a part of this as it is a big deal, including fishermen!

Research!

Consider The Safety Of Those Poor Fish :(

Learn how to identify round goby and find out more ways of how to stop these species from spreading!

Never put a live fish in the water, it could end up being a victim.

It's Illegal!

Never buy or use round goby as bait. Never have one in your possesion.
