Ellis Island

Steps to the Immigration Process

Congress passed laws restricting immigration to the U.S.

Arrival

New Americans

Immigrants had to go through a process of inspections to be allowed to enter the U.S.

They took a ferry to new Jersey or to Manhattan, and began their life in the U.S.

Up to 10,000 immigrants arrived each day, so Ellis Island Staff 850 people, including interpreters.

People arriving were transported by ferries or barges to Ellis Island.

Ferries

Immigrants got $20 when they were allowed to the U.S. They also could exchange other currency for the U.S. dollar.

Immigrants upon arrival were labelled with their name and the name of the ship they came on.

Immigrants entered they building and had to leave their belongs in the baggage room.

The immigrants were seperated as the went down the stairs. They were seperated to the dormitories, hospital, or were allowed to enter the U.S.

European immigrants in the late 1800s to the early 1900s came through Ellis Island. Ellis Island was the main immagration port into the U.S.

They checked the personal records and legal documents of the immigrants.

They seperated the men from the women and children.

Stairway to the Great Hall

The Great Hall

The immigrants had verbal inspections in the great hall. This is also the registry room.

Inspection started when the immigrants had to walk a steep flight of stairs. The doctors were observing them to see obvious medical issues.

Chalk Marks

Deportation

If immigrants had a non-curable disease they were sent away.

If the doctors identified a problem, the immigrant in question would be marked with a chalk letter indicating their problem.

Physical or Mental Rooms

The Hospital

If an immigrant had a curable disease they were sent to the Ellis Island Hospital.

Those with chalk marks were sent to rooms to be further examined.
