The Art of Calligraphy

When Calligraphy is used

During the 20th century the uses of calligraphy shifted radically. It has now been employed as a tool of the Chinese revolution and not just a skill learned by scholars. It is now a popular hobby for amateurs all over the world.

What is Calligraphy?

The word calligraphy comes from a Greek word meaning "beautiful writing." We usually associate this word with good handwriting that is legible and attractive. In China, however, calligraphy is regarded as an art form and is admired and displayed in museums just as paintings are.

Calligraphy is often used to decorate items we use daily. For instance, when you go to a Chinese restaurant you may notice that the dishes are painted with characters as well as with colorful pictures.

History of Calligraphy

Ancient China is one of the places that writing developed independently. Archaeologists have found oracle bones that date back to the Shang dynasty with calligraphy used in the writing. The chinese written language includes many strokes, which is perfect for calligraphy.

Tools used in Calligraphy

There are 4 main tools that you need for calligraphy. A writing brush, an ink stick, an ink stone, and paper.

Normally, a writing brush has two parts — a nib made from animal hair , and a shaft made from bamboo, porcelain, and jade. An ink stick is made of soot and animal glue, and is a type of solid ink used for calligraphy and brush painting.

Calligraphers need to grind this ink stick consistently against an ink stone, a piece of stone that must be hard and fine, with some water to make liquid ink before they can apply it to paper. A special type of paper called Xuan paper is used in calligraphy for its soft surface and fine texture.
