Best Practices

Teachers must implement research-based practices diligently and to fidelity. After completing the readings for this class, my focus this year is to implement more paired peer work in my class. I will be sure to provide well though out plans, and offer plenty of guidance while students are working together. It will allow them to have deeper discussions and reinforce their knowledge through it. It will also allow me the freedom to roam the classroom and listen in on their conversations. I can then question them and help them work their way to higher level thinking.

1. Provide students with explicit directions through modeling and using I do, We do, You do.

2. Read higher level texts with students using scaffolding and chunking while reading through the text.

3. Provide vocabulary practice, build fluency, reinforce word recognition, and increase reading and language comprehension through paired reading.

Role of Educators

Theoretical Foundations of Reading & Writing

The 21st century brought No Child Left Behind (NCLB). It was an attempt to get all students on grade level. This was an unrealistic goal because it had a "one size fits all" mentality towards reading instruction. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were first introduced in 2010, and are an attempt at nationwide standards. Both of these educational policies have changed the face of education because of the emphasis placed on standardized tests.

Guide students to think at a higher level: explain, analyze, and apply new knowledge.

Create a safe environment, which allows students to feel comfortable with taking risks.

Relate new knowledge to previous knowledge, and allow time for discussion and writing. This allows literacy skills to be transferred over to content areas.

Reading instruction in the early 1900's was mainly just reading. Phonics was dropped as a method of instruction in the 1930's and a whole language approach was used.

Silent reading became a practice in the 1940's. The 1960's gave students a choice on what they wanted to read, and introduced writing in reading instruction. Phonics was brought back in the 1970's, and reading comprehension was the hot topic in research. The 1980's saw the integration of reading and writing, and the start if standardized tests.
