Latin Music History

  • Spain and also Portugal brought their msucial culture along with their languages.
  • Spain influenced the use of the pan flute which is one of the largely used instruments.
  • Africa influenced Latin America's music by giving them the rhythms that make up the Samba and Salsa dances.
  • The modern styles of R&B or Reggae first started from the Latin Ameica culture.
  • The Mayans gave the largest amount of influence in Latin music with their distinct instruments and also rhythms.
  • One of the earliest paintings of the history of music in their culture was found in one of their ancient temples.
  • Another dance influenced by the culture of Africa is the Zamba which is the national dance in Argentina.
  • In Columbia, the Cumbia is their form of traditional music, but modern Mexican music has used it in their popular music.
  • The main reason for the spread of music culture and the variety of music that has been formed started with Christopher Columbus taking mulitple trips to new areas.
  • As he travelled up and down South America, the different cultures of music mixed together, especially from the Mesoamerican people groups.
  • Today, one of the most well known groups that plays music is a mariachi band.
  • Typically we see mariachi bands play in groups of four and all of them play a stringed instrument.
  • In actuality a mariachi band can have twenty members.
  • The group usually has two violins, two trumpets, a Spanish guitar, a vihuela, and a guitarron.
  • In the same way the other cultures affected music, they also affected the maricahi band.
  • Based on which region the people of the band live, they may have diferent instruments in place of another groups choice of instrument.
  • Many dances today that have any culturally diverse backgrounds have a maricahi band that accompanies the dance.
