The heart is a muscular organ found in all vertebrates that is responsible for pumping blood throughout the blood vessels by repeated, rhythmic contractions.

Functions of the heart include:

-Routing blood

-Ensuring one-way blood flow

-Regulating blood supply

Digestion

Excretion

Nutrient storage

Nutrient conversion

Detoxification of harmful chemicals

Synthesis of new molecules

BLOOD ARTERIES

Arteries

- carry blood away from the heart

Capillaries

- where exchange occurs between blood and tissue fluid

Veins

- are blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart

BRAIN

KIDNEY

-Excretion

-Regulation of blood volume and pressure

-Regulation of the concentration of solutes in the blood

PLACENTA

-It serves as the fetal lungs, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract and as a separate endocrine organ throughout pregnancy.
