- The rivers Abita River and the Bogue Falaya drain into the Tchefuncte.
- It is named after an Indian tribe.
- The Tchefuncte is approximately 48 miles long.
- The river also has its own lighthouse.
It flows through Washington and St.TammanyParish before draining into Lake Pontchartrain in Madisonville.
The Tchefuncte was an important waterway back in the 19th century. The lumber and other building materials were shipped down the river, across Lake Pontchartrain and to down to New Orleans, where it was used for construction.
