Properties of Watercolor

  • Watercolor is transparent.
  • Watercolor is water-soluble.
  • Watercolor leaves no texture.

Brushes

Basically...

  • Large flat brushes are for washes
  • Brushes with sharp edges create sharp lines
  • Liner brushes create fine lines
  • Fan brushes are hardly ever used
  • Scrubber brushes are used to scrub away paint
  • Watercolor brushes (in this classroom) have red tips. DO NOT USE THEM FOR ANYTHING BUT WATERCOLOR.

  • More vibrant in color
  • Allows for thicker application
  • Still usable once dry in palette
  • Almost always white paper
  • Different thicknesses or weights
  • Labeled by how heavy one ream is (ex: 400 lbs.)
