Archery was encouraged by a series of laws designated to keep the longbow in continuous use. By law: every man betweeen the ages of 17 and 60 was required to maintain a bow and practise regularly.

Elizabethan sports: Archery

Archery contests were extremely popular during the Elizabethan era and prizes could be won for the most skilled of archers.

Tournaments, such as archery and jousting, were mainly events for the rich to show off their possessions. The practical uses of Elizabethan sports were teaching and practicing skills that could be used in battle or for survival.

Outside of being a tournament sport archery also involved skills used in battles. Since commoners were the most numerous in battle they could participate as well. Archers were very important in the military. During Henry V's reign, 6000 English soldiers shot down 85000 french soldiers in Agincourt, a famous battle during middle ages.
