Do you use technology to reinforce skills taught to students? What types of technology and classroom computer applications have you incorporated in your daily lessons?

While I don't use a great deal of technology in my daily lessons, I use it a lot to reinforce skills. I teach small intervention groups so we do mostly hands on activities at the table. To reinforce skills, my students use Stride Academy (this is school wide), Fast Math, Math Magician, and flashcards on Math Fact Cafe. There are a variety of other websites the students have to choose from for other educational activities. Something I would like to learn more about is Kahoot. Several teachers are using it and my students are asking to use it in my room.

What are some of the challenges you face with teaching students with disabilities and how have you addressed these barriers?

What are some challenges you face working with your fellow teachers/colleagues at your assigned school?

  • One of the most difficult situations I find myself in is when a classroom teacher and I differ in the way we address challenging behaviors. There has to alot of communication and a willingness to not take differing opinions personally.
  • Another challenge is when teachers or other staff see a student behaving inappropriately and step in without understanding the student or the situation. I usually try to let teachers know at a calm time that if they see me with a student I will let them know if I need help.
  • Another challenge is balancing accommodations. I have to make sure I am not overaccommodating while helping others to understand the accommodations that are needed.
  • Every day and sometimes minute is a new challenge. I have to continuously evaluate what is and is not working and adjust accordingly.
  • Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork. Organization is key.
  • Everyone doesn't want to or feel capable of including all students in all activities. I have found that offering to help instead of trying to force inclusion works best.
  • Exhaustion. Working with children, particularly those with higher needs, is exhausting. Burnout is common. It is important to take time to recharge and maintain a personal life.

What types of disabilities have you been accustomed to working with in the classroom setting?

The majority of the students I work with have a specific learning disability. With each year, I do work with more students who have autism or are intellectually disabled as we work to include more students in the general education classroom.

How Many Years Have You Been Teaching?

This is my eleventh year teaching.

  • I taught five years at a private school - 1 year 5th grade, 2 years 6th grade, 2 years high school math.
  • This is my 6th year in my current position as a collaborative special education teacher for 3rd and 4th grades.
