Pride and Prejudice: Feminism

Songs

Popular - From the musical Wicked

Song Explanation

This song shows the way that women have to act and are expected to look like. We can see this especially with the lyrics, "I'll teach you the proper poise when you talk to boys, Little ways to flirt and flounce, I'll show you what shoes to wear, How to fix your hair, Everything that really counts."

If I Were A Boy - Beyoncé

Another one of our main ideas is the concept if beauty for women in that particular time period.

Beauty

Song Explanation:

This particular song showcases all the ways that men and women are different. It is from a female's point of view. During the whole song it talks about how men have it easier than women do. We can see this easily with the lyrics, "If I were a boy, Even just for a day, I’d roll outta bed in the morning

And throw on what I wanted ... And I’d never get confronted for it., 'Cause they’d stick up for me."

JSTOR Quotes

This is a modern trailer made using clips from the CW show, Gossip Girl, which revolves around the upper class of the Upper East Side in Manhattan.

Gossip

"Elizabeth and Jane climb up the ladder to a higher level of feeling and intelligence which is charity as love in marriage." (Richard Mckeon, "Pride and Prejudice; Thought, Character, Argument, Plot. 514).

Explanation of Quote:

This quote is relevant to our topic and question because it showcases the lack of love and romance among the average couples most typical marriages during that time period.

This graphic shows the gossip side of our presentation. Obviously, the two women are telling each other secrets and gossiping.

This is the trailer for the 2005 movie version of Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet.

"But Darcy draws the attention of the room by his appearance and by the reports of his fortune." (Richard Mckeon, "Pride and Prejudice Thought, Character, Argument, Plot).

Explanation of Quote:

This quote shows how men need to have money to be wanted in marriage. However, money is not the only factor that comes into play with marriage and how desireable they are to women, they also would be better off if they are at some degree, attractive.

Quotes from Volume III

"I mean that no man in his senses would marry Lydia on so slight a temptation as one hundred a year during my life , and fifty after I am gone (Austen 273). "

Explanation of Quote:

This quote exemplifies the way that marriage worked during that time period. The quote has the idea that certain women are desirable and others simply are not as desirable.

"Ah! Jane, I take your place now, and you must go lower, because I am a married woman (Austen 285)".

Explanation of Quote:

This quote is a good example of how the only way women can only move up the social ladder by marriage. Women are very low down, but if a woman were to get married, they would slightly move up in social class ranks simply because of that one action.

Quotes from Volume II

"The death of your daughter would have been a blessing in comparison of this... They agree with me in apprehending that false step in one daughter will be injurious to the fortunes of all the others; for who, as Lady Catherine herself condescendingly says, will connect themselves with such a family." (Austen 48.)

Explanation of Quote:

Mr. Collins is basically telling the Bennet family that it would have been better if Lydia had died due to the shame she had brought to her own family. This really shows how important the basic rules of their society were. Also in this quote we see an example of how "brainwashed" Mr. Collins is by Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Who is a key manipulator in this novel.

"Well, my comfort is, I am sure Jane will die of a broken heart, and then he will be sorry for what he has done. (Austen 40.)

Explanation of Quote:

This quote is slightly different. Mainly because it is a moment when relationships and marriage are about more than money and inheritance. This quote is about Jane and Bingley's relationship together.

Quotes From Volume I

"A women must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing and the modern languages to deserve the word; and besides all of this, she must possess something in her air and manner of walking, the tone in her voice, her address, and expressions, or the word is half deserved (Austen 34)."

Explanation of Quote:

These are qualities typical upper to middle class women possessed in this time, and all of these qualities are things designed to make women better wives, Rather than women possessing any qualities that will help them earn a living for themselves.

``Well,'' said Charlotte, ``I wish Jane success with all my heart; and if she were married to him to-morrow, I should think she had as good a chance of happiness as if she were to be studying his character for a twelvemonth. Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance. If the dispositions of the parties are ever so well known to each other, or ever so similar before-hand, it does not advance their felicity in the least. They always contrive to grow sufficiently unlike afterward to have their share of vexation; and it is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the person with whom you are to pass your life.'' (Austen 19).

Explanation of Quote:

This quote has a particular line that relates to our feminist topic. The line about happiness in marriage is especially important because it really shows how women were not typically marring men for love. And it is interesting because the women are so used to not falling in love and getting married so that fact is just another thing in life, but today it may shock some men and women.
