Walking in the Footsteps of St. Peter

Peter the Apostle

What does it mean today?

During the time of Jesus, Peter is listed first among the 12 Apostles

Peter is described as the spokesperson of the Apostles as well as the head of the apostles

Today at St. Peter's Boys HS, we embrace his namesake, not just as a convenient or clever title but to embrace his example for us as an Apostle and a saint.

How do you see your own story fitting into his?

Missing the Mark

In a majority of the instances where Peter's faith is tested, we most often see him fail.

Through all of these failures, Jesus continually gives Peter another chance.

Not Quite Keeping Watch

Not Quite Walking on Water

Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to feel sorrow and distress.

Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death.* Remain here and keep watch with me.”

He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.”

When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?

Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, “My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!”

Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open.

He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again.

Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners.

Mt 26: 36-45

When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.

At once [Jesus] spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”

He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.

But when he saw how [strong] the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Post-Resurrection Peter

After Jesus hands Peter the keys to his Church he become the leader of the early Christians and subsequently the first pope.

In the early years of Christianity, Peter and Paul play key roles in the development and expansion of the early Church.

Paul meets his demise in Rome as he is famously known for being crucified upside down.

Who is Peter?

Why is our school named St. Peter's?

Originally known as Simon Peter in the Gospels

From Bethsaida in the Province of Galilee

Worked as a fisherman with his brother Andrew

St. Peter's Boys HS is a parish high school of St. Peter's Church.

We are one of the few remaining parish high schools left in the New York Archdiocese.

The Call of the First Disciples

As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother

Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.

He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

At once they left their nets and followed him.

He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them,

and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.

(Mt 4:18-22)
