5. Prepare final format

Once you and the client are happy with the final sound, you need to prepare for the final end format.

CDs will need a Red Book format to be made; this can include ISRC codes, CD-TEXT, pauses between songs etc. Audition allows you to do all of this.

MP3s might need ID3 tags written, high and low quality versions made, decisions on VBR or CBR and so on.

The finished version can then be manufactured or digitally distributed.

4. Compare tracks

3. Apply effects

Starting with EQ, start to shape the sound of your tracks to sound like the reference track.

With the reference song on one track and the other songs on other tracks, quickly use solo to switch between songs. If you can hear a noticeable difference, go back and tweak.

EQ can be too broad a tool, so use multi-band compression for fine tuning

It helps to have the meters added to the master bus here (but no effects!) so you can see quickly any changes between songs.

Then start to use compression, reverb, and finally a limiter to get the most out of the track.

Make sure you compare your song in different speakers, rooms, listening environments.

It's important to realise that all plugins are not born equal - try out and experiment with different EQ and dynamic plugins, even if they are on the same settings.

2. Analyse the tracks

For your reference tracks and any other tracks you are mastering, using the following meters to analyse the tracks:

Goniometer

Phase Correlation Meter

Infinite Average EQ

Loudness Meter (Peak and RMS)

Use these meters to get a feel for what is happening in the tracks and what is needed to make your tracks sound like the reference tracks.

1. Reference Tracks

The first step is to make sure you have some good reference tracks in the genre you are mastering.

Even if your setup isn't ideal, by using the reference tracks you will know what those songs sound like on your system.

You can then start analysing those tracks to find out what makes them tick.
