So says the stars: A textual analysis of Glamour, Essence and Teen Vogue horoscopes

Why are women more interested in horoscopes?

Annotation: This article talks about the increased demand for horoscopes to be in magazines. They have conducted studies that show that people who read their horoscopes are more likely to believe in the accuracy. Horoscopes are written to apeal to the readers outstanding qualities. The advice given through the horoscopes is manly stereotypical.

Extended Annotation: Throughout the article it was often mentioned that women are the only ones reading horoscopes. Many times the only magazines that have horoscopes are those intended for women to read. Why is it that women are targeted with horoscopes or are more interested?

Who is behind writing these horoscopes and why do people find them accurate?

Annotation:

Women are more attracted to horoscopes because the give "the most blatantly instructive content on girlness, and their astrological advice does promote a superficial mainstream kind of girl power.' These are written to attract girls who want to feel more powerful and more assured of their future.

Extended annotation: there wasn't much information on why girls were more interested than boys were. Girls tend to view them more because they are in girl targeted magazines.

The Word: Horoscopes

Annotations:

Every day people go and read their horoscopes. They immediately feel as if they relate to their lives and that they are truly and certain zodiac sign based on what their future consist of. The people behind writing these horoscopes actually write them purposefully to be vague so that they could relate to anyone's life at any time. "The discret newspaper astrologer cast his or he eyes into our destinies with studied vagueness: ' you will make contaces today that will stand yo in good stead. Watch out for the morning hours. Avoid lavih spending.' These words could apply to anyone, not just a Leo or a Scorpio" (Horoscpes, 23).

Extended Annotations:

Many people would only read their horoscope and in the tiniest little details they would find somethin at relates to their lives. If one were to read every single one they would find that they ar all very similar and relate just about anyone's life. There are no qualifications needed in order to write horoscopes for a newspaper that are astrology based.

  • Has there been a shift in the Zodiac Signs?

New zodiac signs 2011: Can one guy just change the zodiac like that?;

In a newspaper interview, astronomer Parke Kunkle pointed out a fact that astronomers have known for millennia, prompting an uproar among those who believe in astrology.

Annotations:

In this article it is stated that for years people have been referring to themselves as the wrong sign and that there is actually a thirteenth rotation that the babylonians forgot. "The sun actually moves through 13 constellations, but the numerologically inclined Babylonians opted to go with a more auspicious 12. The constellation left out: Ophiuchus" (Sappenfield 1). The Babylonians left the thirteenth sign out because they set up the chart for simplicity not for accuracy.

Why Check a Horoscope?

Extended Annotation:

The article states that the Babylonians left out the sign to make the calendar simpler and to line it up better with our actual calendar. The Babylonians did not want to ruin the already made 12 year calendar, but regardless of the months the signs dont line up within the month period anyway. This article on the thirteenth sign led me to and article about NASA's view on the new sign. "None of this is new information, points out Phil Plait, of Slate Magazine. He notes that astrologers have been ignoring the 13th constellation for thousands of years, and that sun actually passes through up to 21 constellations, by some counts" (Weston Williams Staff, 1). There are many constellations that go through the suns path. Should we have 21 zodiac signs? How many did the Babylonians leave out and how much information about the signs are we missing?

Why You Shouldn't Worry If You Are No Longer a Taurus." Lexis Nexis. Weston Williams Staff, n.d. Web. 28 Sept. 2016.

Why are people so amused with horoscopes if they know they are not real?

"History of Astrology"

Annotation

The Babylonians were the first credited with the birth of astrology. The Babylonians introduced it to the greeks which is where the planets and the use of the greek gods names came into play. They first introduced the signs into four groups: fire, water, air, and earth. These were based on the weather during those certain months. The division of the 12 signs is based of the rotation around the Sun and they related them to character traits of life. " Your horoscope charts the relative positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars at a specific time and place of your choosing (e.g., the date, time and location of your birth). Astrologers don't use "clock time." Rather, they measure it as "sidereal" time, as measured from the sun's position at the spring equinox." The location of the sun determines where the star sign falls

Extended Annotation:

This article on the history of astrology explains the origins of the zodiac signs, but brings up the question of whether or not the signs are still the same as they were back in Babylonian times and whether or not the rotation is off and if this has caused the stars to shift. We have leap year in order to put us back on track, but is it possible that even a tiny bit of time off over millions of years could completely shift the signs that we follow today.

Annotations:

Some people are religious about check their horoscopes even though if you ask them they will say they know it's not real. The Monitor's Daily Religous Article wrote about the draw to reading horoscopes and shows the professional art of reading horoscopes. "Astrology is a kind of self-absorption, we might say. And that's the tip-off to why we'd do better not checking horoscopes at all. Because the thing about self-absorption is, you can't really reap the pleasures of it without setting yourself up for its pains" (Monitorys Daily... 21). People love hearing about themselves and horoscopes provide them with a way to do this without seeming narcisistic.

Extended Annotations

The article talks about how people get a self- satisfied feeling when the read their horoscopes because they are written to make the reader feel as if they have a bright future. Even if there are negative aspects in the horoscopes people look at this as something they will overcome. How are the personalities of certain signs measured? Are they made up like the horoscopes? How were the Babylonians predidcting personalities so long ago or are they still real?

How do the stars play a factor in out everyday life?

Astrology: Science, pseudoscience ideology?

The zodiac signs personalites were determined by the rythms that the stars presented with the peoples occupations. "Life itself, the everyday life of hunters, shepherds, and later farmers, engendered the idea that there was some sort of dependence of earthly events on the position and movement of the stars. The stars really did play a tremendous role in this life, one that we today find difficult to imagine" (Pruzhinin,, 3)). The stars most significant role was the rotation of them around the sun. As the rythm of the stars and the sun were formed every day in these peoples lives then cam the personality traits that came along with the signs. Many of the signs personalities also come from the greek gods and goddesses that represent their signs and the made up persnalites that they gave to them.

Extened Annotation:

Someone with the sign of Aries is considered to be a strong and independent person with leadership skills. The relates to explantion of Aries the greek god. "That slightly reddish little star we can see with the naked eye on a clear night--why is it masculine? What are the features that identify its gender? And where do we get the idea that Mars is malicious and aggressive? From the standpoint of standard scientific methodology, we would have to answer these questions, for example, as follows: these notions arose, in particular, because Mars in fact "protects" soldiers, hangmen, and doctors (i.e., people whose profession in one way or another involves bloodshed), which is expressed in such-and-such rigorously recordable and quantitatively expressible events, actions, and dependencies" (Pruzhinin,, 4). The basis of zodiac signs personalities were based on stereotypes. They saw a red star an immediatatly associated it with war and more masculine traits.
