You're not in high school anymore!
What Are Some Differences Between High School and College?
Tip #1
College is your job
What Can I Do?
- Lecture and readings may not overlap 100%
- More team/group assignments with meetings outside of class
- Attendance may not be required
- No extensions on due dates
- Participation affects grades
- Fewer reasons for excused absences
- You are responsible for your own learning & behavior
- You can drop a class
- You spend less time in class
- You spend more time studying outside of class (hopefully)
- You have more reading
- You have fewer tests
- You might not be reminded of due dates and exams
- There are fewer daily assignments and they may not be checked
- Instructors don’t tell you exactly what’s on the test
You are a professional student.
Just like a professional in the workplace, you are responsible for your actions, managing your time, and following through on your obligations.
Here are some tips to help with the transition:
When interacting with your professors, remember to take it seriously and behave professionally.
- Make a weekly schedule & use a planner
- Make a master list of all assignments, projects, and exams for the entire term
- Get to know your personal style and schedule your classes accordingly
- Don’t get behind on readings
- Learn how to take good notes
- Go to every class
- ASK FOR HELP!
Tip #2
Don't be afraid to ask for help
You are going through a lot of transitions...
- be living on your own for the first time
- have a job
- be making new friends
- be in a relationship
- be in a new setting/ city
- be involved in lots of extra activities
- be managing your own finances for the first time
You'll be GREAT!
