  • Uniform stood out and recognized everywhere

The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s was a powerful shift that fused fashion and politics. The use of fashion statements by political figures during this time conveyed a sense of racial identity for African Americans, expressed their pride of African heritage and promoted their fight for equality. The "Afro" hairstyle became a trademark of nonconformity allowing African Americans to embrace their ethnic features. Similarly, African Kente cloth and the dashiki symbolized a growing desire for cultural dignity. Furthermore, the uniform worn by the Black Panther Party became a means of visual communication that voiced their political protest. Subsequently, this revolutionary era of vogue can be seen in today's celebrity fashion.
