Today's Project

Today you all will be working in teams to build your own smaller version of the Land of Giants structures

...what are they for?

• The Arctic fox is the only mammal that is indigenous in Iceland.

• Some Icelandic people still believe in elves, trolls, and other mythical characters.'

• A traditional sport in Iceland is Glíma, which is a type of wrestling.

• Handball is the main traditional sport of Iceland. Other popular sports include football (soccer), basketball, swimming and horseback riding.

• The official language of Iceland is Icelandic which has changed little over the centuries.

• Iceland became part of Norway in 1262. 400 years later it was a part of Denmark before becoming independent in 1918 and a full republic in 1944.

• In 1980, Iceland became the first country to elect a women president.

• Iceland is home to around 200 volcanoes and it has a third of all lava flows found on Earth. 10% of the total land is covered by either cooled lava beds or glaciers.

• Iceland has some unique natural features such as ice cap mountains, volcanoes, hot springs, waterfalls, glaciers, geysers and ancient cooled lava flows.

• The national dish of Jordan is Mansaf, a large tray of rice with chunks of stewed lamb and jameed, a yogurt sauce.

• Jordan's climate mostly consists of arid deserts, but sometimes it gets rainy in the West.

• The lowest point in Jordan and the world is the Dead Sea.

• The official language of Jordan is Arabic.

• 5,795,000 people live in Jordan.

• Most people are Sunni Muslim; some are Christian.

• Jordan's government is a constitutional hereditary monarchy which means that they have Queens and Kings that are born into the position and are not voted on like the presidents here in America.

Today's Project

The Dead Sea

• Fill the container with water.

• Add about an eighth of a cup of salt to the water.

• Mix the solution together with a coffee stirrer, until the salt is dissolved.

• String the paper clip along the yarn until it is centered.

• Place paper clip in the water and close the lid.

• Tie the yarn around the top of the lid.

While half of you make your projects...

The other half will go to the observation station and fill out their chart.

• First locate two hidden items in the room and make observations about them.

• Then there will be an example of a salt rock formation growing from 2 weeks ago and 1 day ago.

• Take a look at each salt rock formation and make observations, writing down what you see and drawing a picture.

Today's Project

Forest Floor:

- Take foam and glue on dirt. Place at the bottom of the bottle.

Understory, Canopy and Emergent Layers:

- Take sticks and glue on crumpled pieces of tissue paper on top to resemble trees (make sure to have different lengths of sticks in order to represent the layers of the rainforest)

- Push the sticks into the foam (forest floor)

- Take pipe cleaners and wrap them around sticks/trees to resemble vine

- Glue animal cut outs in the proper places/layers inside the bottle

- Place bottle over base and close

What can you do to help save the rainforest?

- use less paper to help save the rainforest

- use less gasoline and plastic

- eat less red meat

• Madagascar has the 3rd largest coral reef system in the world, the Toliara coral reef, off the south-western coast.

• The lemur is only found in the wild in Madagascar. As of 2012, there were 103 living species of lemur in Madagascar.

• Madagascar is one of the world’s main suppliers of vanilla and cloves; the country currently provides half of the world's supply of sapphires.

• Use the practice mask to try out a design using whiteboard markers.

• Once you have decided on a design, paint the designs onto your mask

• The official name of Madagascar is the Republic of Madagascar.

• Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world

• The official languages of Madagascar are Malagasy and French.

• Since 1895, France governed Madagascar. In 1960, the country became a fully independent country called the Malagasy Republic. It became the Democratic Republic of Madagascar in 1975 and the Republic of Madagascar in 1993.

The Sakalava people

The Sakalava are an ethnic group of Madagascar with its population over 600,000.Their name means "people of the long valleys."

The Sakalava people are a very proud people that have been around for thousands of years. Because they have been around for so long, there are many important pieces of their culture.

One part of this is their traditional face painting. Many women in Madagascar put a yellow paste on their face. It is made from a special type of wood and is used to keep the skin healthy and protected from the sun and mosquitoes. The Sakalava tribe uses the same paste to paint decorations on their faces.
