Hi,
- 00:02 - 00:04
my name is Daniel Bell and this is my
- 00:04 - 00:08
overall reflection for the middle school developmental project.
- 00:08 - 00:13
Having worked at middle school for almost like my entire career.
- 00:13 - 00:19
Um Going back into a middle school was a very interesting experience.
- 00:19 - 00:23
Um I have only been doing my residency this school year at an elementary school
- 00:23 - 00:27
and just to have worked in that environment for a short amount of time,
- 00:27 - 00:31
going back to middle school was very eye opening and I
- 00:31 - 00:34
must admit I did not miss middle school at all.
- 00:35 - 00:37
Um remember that, I mean,
- 00:37 - 00:39
I remember always loving middle school because I know
- 00:39 - 00:42
how I was when I went to middle school
- 00:42 - 00:45
and um the experiences that I had,
- 00:45 - 00:48
so I really wanted to connect and work with middle school
- 00:48 - 00:51
um Children because I know how difficult the time is.
- 00:51 - 00:55
It's a very awkward time, is a very difficult time in their development.
- 00:56 - 01:01
Um You know, having been at an elementary setting or a whole school setting for,
- 01:01 - 01:02
you know, some people,
- 01:02 - 01:05
some kids are there for five years somewhere there for six years,
- 01:05 - 01:08
it's a very long time um to have to adjust to
- 01:08 - 01:12
only being in a setting 41 to 2 years dependent,
- 01:12 - 01:14
I'm sorry, 2 to 3 years depending on the school,
- 01:14 - 01:18
but in north Carolina in the Cumberland County, all middle schools are 6th,
- 01:18 - 01:20
7th and 8th grade, so it will be three years,
- 01:20 - 01:23
but it's just still a very weird adjustment
- 01:23 - 01:24
from having
- 01:25 - 01:28
maybe just one teacher all day long or two teachers
- 01:28 - 01:32
if your teachers did block to having six different teachers.
- 01:32 - 01:35
Um I think about the attention span of
- 01:35 - 01:37
elementary school kids that I've seen and what I
- 01:37 - 01:40
learned about during the developmental project and now these
- 01:40 - 01:43
kids are in multiple classes throughout the day.
- 01:43 - 01:49
Um some up to about 50-55 minutes, um and maybe 65 minutes.
- 01:49 - 01:51
It um it's definitely an adjustment
- 01:52 - 01:55
and being at the school and shadow with my students, you know,
- 01:55 - 01:57
I was just able to really see
- 01:57 - 02:02
um again, their attention span, how well they can process information,
- 02:02 - 02:06
how much they can retain information from having been in so many different classes.
- 02:07 - 02:11
Um when you look at the academic programs and things that are offered,
- 02:11 - 02:16
um the choices do get a little limited when it comes to middle school resources
- 02:17 - 02:18
are not as
- 02:19 - 02:22
of relatively available as they are in elementary school,
- 02:22 - 02:26
so it's really kind of like a, like a complete opposite.
- 02:26 - 02:30
So the structure is set up very differently.
- 02:30 - 02:30
Again,
- 02:30 - 02:32
there aren't always time for teachers
- 02:32 - 02:35
to build individual relationships with students,
- 02:35 - 02:37
which is definitely a downfall because again,
- 02:37 - 02:39
you only have these students temporarily and
- 02:39 - 02:42
more so speaking for like elective elective teachers
- 02:42 - 02:45
who rotates students more frequently than court teachers,
- 02:46 - 02:47
but um
- 02:47 - 02:48
you know, it's
- 02:49 - 02:52
again, I enjoyed the project because again,
- 02:52 - 02:55
I got to go back to what I was always used to and
- 02:55 - 02:57
being as though I'm working in the elementary setting.
- 02:57 - 03:00
Now I was able to see the direct connection and
- 03:00 - 03:06
correlation between the developmental groups from elementary to middle school.
- 03:06 - 03:07
Um
- 03:07 - 03:11
Middle school kids can articulate more about their feelings and emotions,
- 03:11 - 03:14
even though some of them still definitely struggle with that.
- 03:14 - 03:17
A student that eyeshadow in particular, you know,
- 03:17 - 03:19
just straight up told me that no one likes her,
- 03:19 - 03:21
she doesn't like any of her teachers and her teachers don't like
- 03:21 - 03:25
her and that's just like a really sad mentality to have,
- 03:25 - 03:27
you know, just waking up, not even just going to school,
- 03:27 - 03:30
but just waking up on a daily basis anyway.
- 03:31 - 03:36
Um so, you know, I really enjoyed the project and that's it. Thank you.
