  • 00:01 - 00:03

Hi everyone. My name is Hailey Reese.

  • 00:03 - 00:09

And I am a dental student hygienist at pueblo Community College.

  • 00:09 - 00:13

And today I'm gonna be teaching you how to properly brush your teeth.

  • 00:14 - 00:16

So we'll go over some different pamphlets,

  • 00:16 - 00:20

some different videos that I've created and we'll do um

  • 00:20 - 00:24

a little visual activity that we can work together on.

  • 00:24 - 00:31

And then at the end we will go over a little post test just to see what you've learned.

  • 00:31 - 00:33

    So let's get started here.

  • 00:34 - 00:38

We're first going to go into how to properly brush your teeth.

  • 00:38 - 00:41

And so why we want to learn this is because we

  • 00:41 - 00:47

want you to brush your teeth the correct way so you um

  • 00:47 - 00:51

can remove all of the plaque in the bacteria and also prevent

  • 00:51 - 00:55

yourself from getting cavities because no one wants to get cavities.

  • 00:55 - 00:59

So we'll start off with how to achieve good oral hygiene.

  • 00:59 - 01:04

Um And so first step is you want to be using a soft bristle toothbrush.

  • 01:04 - 01:08

Um This is just so it's not super aggressive on your gums.

  • 01:08 - 01:12

You don't want to be too um strong with your hand,

  • 01:12 - 01:14

making sure that you're gums are bleeding.

  • 01:14 - 01:16

    So we don't want that.

  • 01:16 - 01:18

So we want to make sure that we're using a soft

  • 01:18 - 01:23

bristle toothbrush and just being very gentle with our um toothbrush.

  • 01:23 - 01:25

So first we're going to apply the toothpaste and

  • 01:25 - 01:28

you only need about a pea size of toothpaste.

  • 01:28 - 01:32

So you don't need a lot of toothpaste to um get all of the plaque off.

  • 01:32 - 01:36

Um So first what we're gonna do is you're gonna start by brushing the back teeth.

  • 01:36 - 01:40

So you want to make sure that you get all of your molars in the far,

  • 01:40 - 01:44

far back because that's where a lot of food likes to get trapped.

  • 01:44 - 01:47

So we'll start with our back teeth and then we'll move to our front teeth.

  • 01:47 - 01:52

And so after we work with our back teeth and

  • 01:52 - 01:56

our front teeth we are going to brush our tongue.

  • 01:56 - 01:58

    And so our tongue.

  • 01:58 - 02:01

If you're not brushing your tongue good um There's a lot of plaque

  • 02:01 - 02:06

and bacteria that gets stuck on the tongue which can create that breath.

  • 02:06 - 02:10

Um You don't want to get any cavities. You want to make sure you get all of your mouth.

  • 02:10 - 02:16

Um And then from there um it depends on your age. If you are able to use a mouth rinse.

  • 02:16 - 02:18

Um So if you're able to fully spit out the

  • 02:18 - 02:21

mouth rinse without swallowing it you're able to use it.

  • 02:21 - 02:26

Um If you still can't do it yet, that's okay. You can wait till you're a little older.

  • 02:26 - 02:30

Um Just making sure that we get all of the mouth runs out because you don't

  • 02:30 - 02:33

want to get a stomach ache and you don't want to swallow any of that.

  • 02:33 - 02:37

Um And then after that what you'll do is you will floss.

  • 02:37 - 02:39

And so with the floss you want to make

  • 02:39 - 02:41

sure you're getting in between all of your teeth.

  • 02:41 - 02:45

Um Just because there is some food that can get trapped in there.

  • 02:45 - 02:48

Um And so you want to make sure you get that because

  • 02:48 - 02:51

you don't want to get cavities inside or in between your teeth.

  • 02:53 - 02:55

And so next what we're gonna go into is

  • 02:55 - 02:58

we're gonna go into a little video demonstration.

  • 02:58 - 03:03

Um And so this is just some tips on how to get all of the surfaces of your teeth.

  • 03:03 - 03:06

Um So you want to remember to brush twice a day to remove all your black.

  • 03:06 - 03:09

You wanna brush once in the morning and once at night.

  • 03:09 - 03:12

And then you also want to make sure you're flossing at least once a day.

  • 03:12 - 03:18

And if you're not able to do this by yourself you can ask a parent to help you.

  • 03:18 - 03:21

Um And so what we're gonna do is I'm going to play a little video

  • 03:21 - 03:25

here for you um showing you on how to get all of the surfaces.
